REDESIGNING JEWELLERY AFTER A RELATIONSHIP ENDS
Jewellery connected to a relationship can become difficult to wear after a divorce or separation. It may still be valuable, beautifully made or connected to other important memories, yet no longer feel right in its original form.
There is no correct decision and no need to make one immediately. Some people choose to store, sell or pass the jewellery on. Others decide to reuse the metal and gemstones in a new piece that no longer looks or feels tied to the relationship.
If redesign feels like the right option for you, there are several practical ways the original jewellery may be altered, dismantled or completely remade.
what can be reused?
Wedding and engagement jewellery often contains precious metal and gemstones that may be suitable for reuse. The stones can sometimes be removed and reset, while existing gold may be melted and reworked or combined with additional metal where needed.
The jewellery must be assessed first, as its construction, condition and metal content will affect what is possible. You may also want to preserve a hallmark, engraving or particular design detail rather than dismantling everything.
The materials could become a completely different ring, a pendant, earrings or another piece chosen simply because you would enjoy wearing it.
making the jewellery yours again
A redesign doesn’t need to make a dramatic statement or represent a particular kind of new beginning. It only needs to feel right for you.
You may want a subtle change that removes the original association, a practical piece you can wear every day or something completely different. You decide how much of the original jewellery remains visible and what you want the finished piece to become.
