I’ve had a run of jewellery rescue jobs lately — friends and customers bringing me silver pieces that have been loved, worn… and, well, let’s be honest, a little neglected.
The latest was a pair of Tiffany cufflinks with stubborn black marks along the edge. The owner had done what many people do in a panic — grabbed the silver dip. Yes, it shifted some tarnish but the marks stayed put and the dip left that telltale patchy look.
Here’s the thing: silver dip works but it’s a bit like using a chainsaw to prune a rose bush. Harsh, fast and not something you want to do regularly. Over time it can eat into the surface of your silver and leave it looking dull.
So today, I’m sharing my proper old-fashioned cleaning tips — the same ones I use in the workshop — plus how to store your jewellery so it stays beautiful for longer.
Why silver tarnishes (and why it’s not your fault)
Tarnish is simply a natural reaction between silver and the sulphur in the air (and sometimes chemicals from skin, perfume, or even certain foods).
It’s not dirt and it doesn’t mean your jewellery is poor quality — even the finest sterling silver will tarnish over time.
In fact, if you’ve tucked a piece away for “special occasions only” you might find it darkens faster than the silver you wear daily. That’s because regular wear gently polishes silver, keeping tarnish at bay.
The gentle, old-fashioned clean
Here’s my tried-and-tested at-home cleaning routine:
You’ll need:
- A small bowl of warm (not hot) water
- A drop of washing-up liquid (the plain, non-moisturising kind)
- A soft toothbrush (baby toothbrushes are perfect)
- A good quality silver polishing cloth — I use Town Talk
- A soft towel for drying
Step-by-step:
- Fill your bowl with warm water and add a tiny drop of washing-up liquid.
- Pop your jewellery in for a soak (a couple of minutes is plenty).
- Use the toothbrush to gently clean into crevices and around settings.
- Rinse under clean water and pat dry with a towel.
- Finish with a gentle rub over using your silver polishing cloth. This brings back the shine and leaves a protective layer that slows down future tarnish.
Important: If your jewellery has soft stones (like pearls, opals or turquoise), keep them out of prolonged soaking and avoid polishing cloths on the stones themselves.
When a deeper clean is needed
Sometimes, tarnish gets into awkward spots where a toothbrush can’t reach or there’s a build-up of years of dirt. This is where I use professional tools and techniques in my workshop:
- Ultrasonic cleaner: Uses sound waves to gently dislodge dirt from every nook and cranny. It’s fantastic for chain links, intricate settings and pieces with lots of small details.
- Professional silver polish paste: A creamy formula that removes tarnish without stripping away metal, leaving a rich, even shine.
- Pendant motor with soft mops: This is my secret weapon for that “brand new” finish. Using a pendant motor with soft polishing mops and gentle compounds, I can smooth out fine scratches and bring silver back to a mirror polish — all without being abrasive or removing too much metal.
It’s a combination of these methods that transforms dull, lifeless silver into something you want to wear again immediately.
If you’ve got a piece that’s sentimental, valuable, or just too fiddly to clean properly yourself, bring it to me or another trusted jeweller. We can also check settings for loose stones or wear while we work so you get peace of mind as well as shine.
The methods to avoid (please!)

The internet is full of “miracle” jewellery cleaning hacks. Unfortunately, most of them will cause more harm than good. Here are the big offenders:
- Bicarbonate of soda + foil method – Yes, it works… and yes, it’s abrasive. You’ll be wearing away a little bit of silver each time.
- Toothpaste – Contains abrasives that will scratch your silver and stones.
- Harsh chemicals/bleach – These can pit, discolour and weaken the metal.
- Frequent silver dip – Great in an emergency but it’s harsh and strips the protective finish. Use very sparingly.
Storing silver to prevent tarnish
Cleaning is one thing — but preventing tarnish in the first place is even better. Here’s how I store my silver pieces and recommend my customers do too:
- Airtight storage: Keep pieces in zip-lock bags or anti-tarnish pouches.
- Anti-tarnish strips: Little magic tabs you can pop into your jewellery box — they absorb the tarnish-causing particles in the air.
- Separate pieces: Store each piece separately to avoid scratches.
- Dry is best: Never store silver when it’s damp from cleaning, swimming, or even sweat.
- Wear it often: The more you wear silver, the shinier it stays.
A little case study
Not long ago, I cleaned up a lovely lady’s silver pieces — rings, chains, earrings — all tucked away for years. They were dull, grey, and some almost black.
A gentle ultrasonic clean loosened the dirt and tarnish, then I hand-polished with silver paste, followed by the pendant motor and soft mops to bring back the high shine. Finally, a finishing buff with a Town Talk cloth gave them that showroom sparkle.
The transformation was instant. Every gemstone sparkled, the silver gleamed and she left saying, “They look better than the day I bought them!”

Professional vs at-home cleaning — which to choose?
If your jewellery is lightly tarnished and just needs a freshen-up, the at-home method above is perfect.
If it’s badly tarnished, very intricate or set with precious stones, a professional clean is safer and more effective. It also means the whole piece — settings, clasps and stones — gets attention, not just the visible silver.

Final tips for silver care
- Put jewellery on last, after perfume and hairspray.
- Remove jewellery before swimming, hot tubs, or using cleaning products.
- Give silver a quick wipe with a polish cloth after wearing — it takes seconds and makes a big difference.
- Invest in a good silver cloth and actually use it. (If you need one, I keep Town Talk in stock — they’re worth every penny.)
- If you’re storing jewellery for a while, clean it first and store it with anti-tarnish strips so it’s ready to wear.
