Jewellery Repairs: When to Fix, When to Replace

Jewellery holds more than just financial value—it carries memories, stories and sentimental connections that make it truly priceless. Whether it’s a broken chain, a missing stone or a ring that no longer fits, it can be hard to know whether to repair or replace a cherished piece. I offer jewellery repairs from my Charlestown studio near St Austell, and I’ll always explain honestly whether a repair, redesign or replacement is the most sensible option.

When is jewellery worth repairing?

If a piece is meaningful to you, repairing it is almost always worth considering. Here are some common jewellery issues I can help with:

  • Broken Chains & Clasps – A snapped chain or a faulty clasp doesn’t mean the end of your favourite necklace. I can solder breaks, replace worn clasps and ensure everything is secure again. If you have arthritis or dexterity issues, I can also fit easy-to-use clasps that make fastening your jewellery simpler.
  • Resizing Rings – Whether a ring is too tight or too loose, resizing can bring it back to a comfortable fit.
  • Loose or Missing Stones – If a stone is loose or has fallen out, I can secure or replace it. I source stones from ethical suppliers and where possible, match them to your existing ones for a seamless repair.
  • Worn or Thinning Bands – Over time, gold and silver can wear thin, especially on rings. I can reinforce bands to strengthen them and extend their lifespan.
  • Re-tipping or Replacing Prongs – If your ring’s claws are worn, they may not be holding your stone securely. Re-tipping or replacing them will prevent further damage or loss.

If you’re unsure whether a piece can be repaired, bring it in for a chat—I’ll always give you honest advice about what’s possible and whether a repair is the best option.

When is redesign or replacement the better option?

Sometimes, a repair isn’t the best solution. If your jewellery is beyond practical repair or you no longer wear it in its current form, you might consider replacement or redesign:

  • Metal Fatigue – Over time, metal can become brittle and prone to breaking. If a piece is too fragile, it may be safer to create something new from the existing materials.
  • Outdated Styles – If you love the sentiment but not the style, I can work with you to redesign the piece into something more wearable while preserving its meaning.
  • Severely Damaged Pieces – If a ring has been crushed or a bracelet has lost too many links, sometimes it’s better to start fresh with a new setting or design.

I specialise in heirloom jewellery redesign, so if you’d like to breathe new life into an old piece, we can work together to create something unique and personal.
